Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
