The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Maiden Speech
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an bold beginning to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
